A Cajun breakfast spot, Cajun Beignet, is opening in the French Quarter, according to a liquor license application. The upcoming restaurant will open in the former Evangeline Restaurant space on 329 Decatur St.
Cajun Beignet will serve 15 sweet and savory breakfast beignets, flakey and golden brown. While you may have had a sweet beignet, something akin to the creme brûlée or Dubai chocolate beignets offered at Cajun Beignet, savory beignets may be a first for you. Some options will include Nashville chicken and crawfish étouffée beignets.
“I believe there aren’t many savory beignet restaurants in the city,” says Cajun Beignet owner Sean Rhim. “We are proud of serving locals and visitors with our unique styles of beignets.” Diners can also choose from a handful of Cajun dishes and yakameins. They also serve Hawaiian-style shaved ice, characterized by its thinner shave, creating a fluffy experience, sweetened by various syrups.
Operating in an area with a lot of foot traffic from tourists, Rhim says, “we will be able to offer first-time visitors breakfast beignets that are simple, easy to carry and still delicious.”
Cajun Beignet is Rhim’s first restaurant. He’s working through a handful of licenses and permits, aiming to open the restaurant by mid-April 2026. However, he is also in the process of developing a Hawaiian American restaurant on Moloka’i Island in Hawaii, operating within Hotel Moloka’i.
