Since early 2023, Waffle Time has served sweet treats on St. Ann Street in Jackson Square, specializing in Belgian-style and bubble waffles. Now, the company is preparing to open a second French Quarter location at 829 Canal St. The former retail shop at that location is being converted into a Waffle Time that will serve the same menu of dessert waffles, crepes, milkshakes, acai bowls, and ice cream. The Canal Street location will add a section for coffee.

Owner Khalil Alsayed founded Waffle Time in Vienna, Austria in 2018. He recently told What Now New Orleans that success in Austria inspired him to bring Waffle Time to the United States.

“I came from Austria to do the same thing in the United States because I believe in the American dream, and I believe that the United States gives a lot of opportunity to people,” Alsayed explained. “If you have a good product, you can do good things in the United States.”

Having a location in Jackson Square and a location on Canal Street is part of Alsayed’s plan to give Waffle Time high visibility with visitors to New Orleans. He hopes to then leverage that visibility, and a successful concept, to develop a chain of 10 Waffle Time locations in cities like Miami, New York, Las Vegas, and Washington D.C.

“This is the plan,” Alsayed said. “I think, maybe in two years, we’ll do it. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. but my goal is to franchise one day.”
