When beloved Gentilly spot Good Time Sushi closed due to the pandemic, the neighborhood mourned a dependable Japanese restaurant that shipped great value, especially with its hibachi lunch special. But happily, the restaurant is poised for a rebirth, inside a completely new building at the same location that will deliver the experience people remember, but in an updated, contemporary setting.
Operator Jaimie Zhong, whose parents own the restaurant, recently told What Now New Orleans that the old building at 5315 Elysian Fields Ave. was completely demolished. The new building will offer more than double the size, with hibachi tables in the front dining area and a new bar.
“We’re going to bring back a lot of the items that people liked best,” he assured. Zhong added that his family can sense the community’s palpable anticipation for the reopening of Good Time Sushi, which is slated to happen by the end of 2026.
“We have some City Council members who are looking forward to the reopening with us, and the City of New Orleans is planning to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony, whenever we do finally reopen, so we’re looking forward to that,” he said.
