When the ownership structure behind the popular sweets shop Sucré recently changed, the new ownership group signaled that it would aggressively expand on a winning formula, and a second Sucré coming to Royal Street suggests the owners are making good on their intentions.

According to documents filed with the City of New Orleans, a Sucré location is coming to 636 Royal St., which had previously been different art galleries. Renovations to the 989-square-foot space will include new partitions and enclosures for refrigerated dessert display cases. The new Sucré location will not have any cooking on site.

Sucré was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Joel Dondis and pastry chef Tariq Hanna. Though the dessert shop would have million-dollar sales figures in 2015, it would fall from grace as a result of sexual harassment allegations and a bankruptcy filing in 2019. Ayesha Motwani bought the company in 2020 and a recently formed business partnership has triggered an expansion. Ownership has announced plans to expand into markets around Louisiana and beyond.
