A brand new bar concept is finally arriving from veteran bar owner and booze-historian Josh Richholt. Called Down and Out, Josh’s latest bar is expected to take over the space at 503 East 6th Street.
Josh first got his start in 2006, when he worked at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn as Assistant General Manager. He quickly worked his way up from there, becoming Club Manager at Jazz Standard in 2008. Soon, he was able to open up his very first bar, The Well, and later The Wick right next door in 2011.
With a 4,000 square-foot interior and an 11,000 square-foot backyard, The Well quickly became one of the hottest spots in Bushwick. Featuring a draft selection of over 60 beers, The Well had something for everyone and was always hosting concerts. Some of their more prominent guests included Cam’ron and Flatbush Zombies.
As an avid historian, Josh is obsessed with the history of alcohol and its relationship to New York City. Operating under the tagline “Drink in the history”, The Well was also well known for its history as a brewery in the heart of Brooklyn’s old brewing district. Now a series of defunct factories and concert venues, Josh always dreamed about revitalizing an old building to its former glory.
Josh and his team have been working on Down and Out for over two years now. Begun in 2019 and slated for a launch in Spring 2020, the plans for the new space were quickly put to rest by the outbreak of Covid-19. Now though, all the preparations are finally in place and Josh can finally start moving forward with the project again.
Replacing Chicano Gotham at 503 East 6th Street, Down and Out will serve fresh seafood every day until closing, in addition to Josh’s signature whiskey collection. The new space will also offer “small jazz and acoustic acts”, providing guests with great entertainment alongside their meals and drinks. Josh could not confirm when he intends to open specifically, but it appears that the bulk of the work is finally behind him.
