Alexa Marks has ambitious plans to bring the fro-yo craze back, with plans to bring a spot to West Village. Birdie’s will open at 152 Seventh Avenue South, targeting an opening around the end of September, Marks told What Now New York.
A Los Angeles native, Marks recalls days when frozen yogurt shops played a major role in the lives of her and her friends while they were growing up.
“Frozen yogurt places were where I would hang out and where my friends would hang out — it was a staple,” Marks said. “It’s a place to be with friends and family — it’s an activity. And in New York, I felt like that was missing.”
The 700-square-foot space will offer a “warm, timeless and cozy” atmosphere. Marks is partnering with a childhood best friend, who now works in interior design, on the design of the space.
“It’s a place you can come and hang out in if you’re 8 or if you’re 80,” Marks said.
The flavor offerings include classics like vanilla, chocolate, tart, peanut butter, coffee and a dairy-free flavor. There will also be nostalgic toppings to choose from, and Birdie’s is partnering with local businesses in the neighborhood for additional specialty toppings. The website also indicates that there will be candy offerings, with chocolate, sweet and sour mixes.
“I can’t wait to create a space where people can gather and spend time with friends and family and to bring joy to my neighbors,” Marks said. “I’m going to enjoy it just as much as everyone else. I’m so excited to be in such an amazing neighborhood.”
Eventually, Marks would like to expand her frozen yogurt concept to multiple locations.
“Every neighborhood needs good fro-yo and a place to be with loved ones, so I would love to see where this will take us,” Marks said.
