New York’s iconic burger shop is finally coming back to Penn Station.
Some great news is on its way to my fellow commuters. Shake Shack, the iconic burger chain from Danny Meyer, is finally getting ready to reopen its Penn Station outpost. In April 2019, the real estate company Vornado announced plans to shut down about 17 businesses in Penn Station as they prepared to revamp the LIRR corridor between Seventh and Eighth Avenues (a move that this writer is incredibly grateful for, personally). Among other Penn Station mainstays, Shake Shack closed down its LIRR outpost in 2019 alongside other companies like Magnolia Bakery, Starbucks, Pret, and Godiva.
Now though, nearly four years after shutting down and initiating reconstruction (which would be severely delayed by the pandemic), Penn Station’s revival is finally nearing completion. Positioning itself as a first-class transit hub, Penn Station can now serve passengers with more space, new retail and amenities, and improved accessibility options. As part of this redevelopment plan, Shake Shack will also be returning to the popular transit hub.
Danny Meyer has now signed a 3,380-square-foot lease with Vornado and will soon be bringing Shake Shack back to Penn Station. The deal was brokered by Cushman & Wakefield, who did not disclose the asking rent and length of the lease. At the moment, it is still not clear when precisely Shake Shack plans to open its new Penn Station outpost.
Jodi Pulice of JRT Realty Group said in a statement that “With New York City’s retail market rebounding and more employees returning to the office, Shake Shack will benefit from its prime location in the heavily trafficked Penn Station,” adding that, “As an industry leader in environment, social and governance matters, specifically around workforce and supplier diversity as well as the advancement of women and minorities, Shake Shack is an amazing company to work with.”
Most recently, What now New York covered Shake Shack’s expansion into the former Schiller’s space on Rivington, and now the company is continuing to grow in the city that brought it to life. Additionally, our friends up north will be very excited to learn that Shake Shack has also announced plans to open their first-ever location in Canada in 2024.
