Southern Motion, Inc., a Mississippi-based manufacturer of reclining and motion furniture, has initiated a Chapter 11 filing. The decision comes as the company has been facing financial and operational headwinds alongside disputes with a landlord and certain creditors.
Note: A Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing is a legal process that allows a business to reorganize its debts, restructure obligations, and continue operating while working toward financial stability. Under Chapter 11, a debtor typically proposes a plan to repay creditors over time, subject to court approval. A Chapter 11 filing does not necessarily mean a business is closing or going out of business. For additional information, readers are encouraged to contact the business directly.
Southern Motion Inc. Files for Chapter 11
The company voluntarily submitted its petition on August 31, 2026. Case records show that Mary Beth Mayer, the senior vice president and CFO of the company, signed the petition prior to filing.
In an official press release, Southern Motion cited financial and operational challenges for the recent filing. Some of these challenges include a slow retail furniture market and escalating manufacturing costs tied to tariffs and fuel and container rates stemming from geopolitical events.
The company, which operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Gainline Recline Intermediate Corp., hopes to reorganize its finances and strengthen operations through the filing. In addition, it seeks to achieve a more sustainable capital structure, which supports the customers, employees, and business partners.
According to Furniture Today, Southern Motion, Inc. is also dealing with a dispute with the landlord of several of its manufacturing facilities. According to parent company Man Wah Holdings Limited, the company operates eight manufacturing facilities in northern Mississippi. Six of these facilities are leased from the same landlord.
Southern Motion, Inc. is currently involved in commercial disputes with that landlord as well as certain other creditors.
Company Plans to Stay Operational with Proposed $5 Million DIP Financing
The press release adds that the company expects to use cash generated from its ongoing operations, along with a proposed $5 million debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing facility.
The financing is intended to help it maintain operations and ensure that vendors, suppliers, and other business partners are paid on time during the restructuring.
The company has also filed first-day motions in the court to help it transition into Chapter 11 without disrupting its business.
Attorney Evan N. Parrott of law firm Maynard Nexsen PC is representing the company in the case. Aurora Management Partners is its restructuring and financial advisor.
