Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in September 2024, Big Lots is making a significant comeback. After reopening nine stores in April, the discount retailer plans to reopen 55 additional locations across 12 states starting May 1. Big Lots’ Journey From Bankruptcy to New Store Openings
After bankruptcy troubles in September 2024, Big Lots was on the verge of complete shutdown. Things changed after Variety Wholesalers came into the picture. The discount retailer had acquired its 219 stores through a deal in December 2024.
Out of the 200+ stores, nine were reopened under the ‘first wave’ of Big Lots reopenings in April.
The Second Wave of Reopenings Begins On May 1
Starting May 1, new reopenings of 55 Big Lots stores will be seen across 12 U.S. states. North Carolina will have the maximum number of 12 new stores. Other states include Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Alabama.

Future Openings Scheduled for June
June will initiate the ‘third wave’ of Big Lots store reopenings. Following the nine stores reopened in April and 55 in May, Variety Wholesalers plans to reopen approximately 155 additional locations in June.
According to Lisa Seigies, the CEO of Variety Wholesalers, once all 219 Big Lots stores reopen, the discount retailer will have a ‘grand opening celebration’ this fall.
What is in Store for Customers at the Reopened Big Lots Outlets?
Seigies stated in a press release that Variety Wholesalers will be adding new offerings for customers every week before their grand opening celebration in the fall. These include a new apparel section for families, home décor items, closeout deals, health and beauty products, and seasonal items.
The strong comeback of Big Lots under the new leadership can be seen through its new store reopening announcement. With 55 new stores, customers across the 12 U.S. states will also be getting diverse benefits.
