Better Buzz Coffee is one step closer to opening a new café in Downtown Laguna Beach, following a Planning Commission vote approving the project — with key design conditions. According to city documents, there was a 3-1 vote to tentatively proceed with the 280 South Coast Highway location.

The coffee chain has proposed to take over a former BJ’s Restaurant which has been unoccupied. Most of the commissioners were accepting of the idea to welcome a well-known local business to town as part of hopes to revitalize the commercial area.

There will be outdoor seating with a mural on the patio, and cozy interior that’s under 700 square feet. Leasing records from Loopnet show it’s right on the beach in the heart of the city’s oceanfront downtown, offering great visibility and heavy foot traffic.

Known for its SoCal vibe, Better Buzz has a fresh and flavor-packed menu of acai bowls, smoothies, wraps, and sandwiches. It also serves a variety of coffees and teas, and merchandise is usually sold in-store as well.

The current status of the project is unknown, and the company did not return requests for comment before publication.
