A world-class wave pool facility has been proposed for a section of Newport Beach Golf Course land — 3100 Irvine Ave. In addition to guaranteed waves, the property will also house a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant, according to the OC Register.

Plans filed with the city state that Snug Harbor Surf Park would transform 15.38 acres into a 7-acre lagoon. It would result in the removal of the existing golf driving range, pro shop, restaurant, and three golf holes. While not far from the beach, it will offer surfers a place to hang loose no matter the weather, with state-of-the-art Wavegarden Cove technology, up to 1,000 waves per hour, and four surf zones for differing skill levels.

The development will also include a 50,341-square-foot, three-story clubhouse that will house a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant, though details about them are scarce. Additionally, there will be a surf academy, fitness and yoga centers, retail spaces, and 20 lodging units for athletes. Two parking lots will host 351 total spaces.

As for the timeline for the project, it requires several approvals, including a General Plan Amendment, a Conditional Use Permit, a Modification Permit, and a Major Site Development Review. The developers also need to work with FAA regulations since the property is close to John Wayne Airport.  A Planning Commission study session is planned for June 19, and public hearings will be held in July and August. If approved, the park could open by spring 2028.
