Newport Coffee Co. is gearing up for a new chapter, as the local brand prepares to open a second shop in Costa Mesa. According to a local realtor, the business is moving into 1799 Newport Blvd, Suite A-105, the old Side Street Cafe location.
The incoming café is in the permitting process before construction starts. Records from the Orange County Health Department show plans were submitted in September, but marked as unable to be approved a few days later. Although revisions were sent in late October, they were rejected as well. The current status of the project is unknown. Listed as being less than 1,000 square feet, the building has an occupancy limit of 31-60 individuals.
This will be the company’s second location. Renee Poelstra Farman and her husband Sean, both natives of Newport, founded the business in 2014. They opened their first shop on the Balboa Peninsula, steps from Newport’s sandy shores and the city’s pier, at 104 McFadden Pl.
The company is known for its small-batch, locally roasted coffee. Its website highlights that beans are roasted by a partner micro-roaster. The menu features daily drip, espresso drinks, cold brew on tap, and the brand’s signature whole-bean coffee, along with pastries, loose-leaf teas, gelato, acai and pitaya bowls, and assorted grab-and-go snacks.
