The Hobbit restaurant is closing its doors in Orange, at 2932 E Chapman Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2023, according to the Orange County Register.

But the prix-fixe eatery won’t stay closed for long.

The closure is part of the restaurant’s transition plan from the current owners Mike and Debra Philippi who are retiring, to longtime General Manager Matthew McKinney.

McKinney is giving The Hobbit a remodel with plans to reopen In early December 2023. Here’s The Hobbit’s announcement in its entirety:

All great things must come to an end. And while it’s not the end for The Hobbit restaurant, a new chapter is about to begin.

After 50 years at the helm, it’s with great joy Debra and I announce our retirement.

It’s been our greatest pleasure and honor watching our guests, friends, and family create memories year after year — celebrating special occasions, accomplishments, or those “just because” moments.

To our wonderful staff, all the memories and special occasions wouldn’t have been possible without you. We are thankful for everyone who played a part behind the scenes — some who put themselves through college — some doctors, some lawyers; others who moved on to their own businesses in the restaurant industry.

Looking back, we’re so proud of the community of guests who have become friends and family forever.

While this is the end of our chapter at The Hobbit, a new one is about to begin. We are delighted to be entrusting The Hobbit Legacy to our General Manager, Matthew McKinney, the new owner and operator.

Wishing every one of our trusted family, friends, and guests health, happiness, and many thanks for all your loyal patronage over the years!

Who knows, we may run into each other sipping Hobbit bubbles and enjoying hors doeuvres in the wine cellar. You never know who you may run into.

Fondly, Mike and Debra Philippi
