The Good Salt Restaurant Group founded by husband and wife duo Jason and Sue Chin, opened up their fourth restaurant concept in The Julian Apartments off 480 N Terry Ave in downtown on May 25, 2021.
Monroe is described as a “dining and entertainment space” according to their website. Run by Chef Josh, the menu boasts “childhood favorites in the airy, midcentury space with a main dining room, bar, lounge/study, and daytime coffee shop.” The space is inspired by the name “Monroe” from “Dr. William “Monroe” Wells,” according to their website, “and his hospitable spirit as a civil rights hero and founding figure of historical Orlando.”
Dr. William Monroe Wells was an important historical figure who was one of the first Black doctors in Orlando, Florida. Along with being a doctor, he also built a hotel in 1921 for Black Americans who were at the time, banned from Florida hotels due to segregation laws. He played a very pivotal role in his community and in Orlando. The restaurant invites you to read more about him and his legacy here.
The Monroe coffee shop is open 8am – 4pm and the dining room and bar is open 5pm – 10pm.
