Co-owner Marie Mercado of Sampaguita Ice Cream + Bakeshop and Greenery Creamery, plans to bring vegan and dairy-free Filipino desert and pastry options. Drawing on her roots from the Filipino island of Cebu, Mercado intends to honor the culinary traditions of her family and people.
In a phone interview with What Now, Mercado said: “There are thousands of islands, and hundreds of languages, and each island has its own flair. When you eat a certain type of item, you can’t get it on any island or with any culture of people. My family is from Cebu, so it’s an homage to my ancestry, my family and being a Filipino-American woman.”
Mercado described the differentiation between Filipino and American ice cream as emphasizing natural fruit and herb flavors.
According to the website, Orlandoians can expect unique menu offerings like “Soy Sauce Butterscotch Ice Cream” and “Ube Lattes.”
The new concept, which has appeared as a pop-up, will establish home at 1233 E Colonial Drive, replacing Pedicure Spa Depot. The address will be divided with the forthcoming Haan Coffee Roasters. According to Mercado, they are waiting on construction to commence. According to the Instagram page, they are hoping to open in early fall 2022.
