In 2019, father-and-son team Gene and Jake Storms of Sonoran Restaurant Group along with Managing Partner Daniel Fanelli opened their first Rusty Taco in Gilbert, AZ. The team has since added a Scottsdale location, and, in March 2022, will open a third franchised location of the national taco chain, this time in Tempe.
The Tempe spot, which will set up shop just a quick jaunt from ASU, is currently in the liquor licensing phase, and speaking with What Now Phoenix, Jake Storms says the restaurant will likely open in March of 2022. “We’re waiting on our permitting right now, so we’re still a little ways out,” Storms shared. The taqueria will open at 205 E. 7th St.
Rusty Taco offers a whole range of tacos, from specialty to street-style to breakfast. You can also find taco bowls on the menu as well as nachos and churros.
The taqueria was founded by Rusty Fenton, his wife Denise, and their business partner Steven Dunn in Dallas, TX back in 2010. Fenton’s vision was to create an affordable, flavorful neighborhood taco stand, with margaritas of course. Today, over 30 locations of Rusty Taco are in operation across the U.S., with more in development.
