Din Tai Fung’s journey began with Mr. Bing-Yi Yang, whose journey from China’s Shanxi Province to Taiwan in the 1940s would eventually lead to the birth of Din Tai Fung—an internationally acclaimed restaurant renowned for its exquisite Xiao Long Bao, steamed pork soup dumplings.
Mr. Yang’s adventure started with just 20 dollars in his pocket when he arrived in Taiwan at the age of 20. Determined to carve his path, he set up a small shop to sell cooking oil, which he aptly named Din Tai Fung. However, fate had different plans for Mr. Yang, as he and his wife discovered their true passion: making and selling Xiao Long Bao. These delectable broth-filled dumplings soon became a sensation, captivating the taste buds of locals and visitors alike.
The overwhelming popularity of Din Tai Fung’s Xiao Long Bao prompted Mr. Yang to make a life-changing decision—he phased out his oil business and transformed Din Tai Fung into a full-fledged restaurant. With a diverse menu that extended beyond Xiao Long Bao, the brand’s reputation continued to soar, earning accolades and awards, including the coveted Michelin star at its Hong Kong branch.
Today, Din Tai Fung has transcended borders and has become an internationally beloved brand, offering a genuine taste of Taiwan to discerning food enthusiasts in various countries. From the United States and Japan to South Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Europe, and Thailand, Din Tai Fung’s reputation for excellence and authenticity knows no bounds.
So, what exactly is Xiao Long Bao? Translating to “little dumplings in a basket,” these treats hail from the Jiangnan region of China. Prepared with utmost care and steamed to perfection in bamboo baskets, each Xiao Long Bao surprises diners with its delightful burst of flavors within.
Beyond the scrumptious food, Din Tai Fung’s core values form an integral part of its culture, defining the extraordinary dining experience for its guests. These values encompass synergy by prioritizing relationships with guests and fostering a harmonious environment among the team, modesty by approaching interactions with humility, respect, and openness to fresh perspectives, and integrity by building trust through honesty, fairness, and accountability in every action taken, to name a few.
From its humble beginnings in Taiwan to its global presence today, Din Tai Fung’s success is a testament to the passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment of Mr. Bing-Yi Yang and his family. Their culinary legacy continues to touch the hearts and palates of people across the world, inviting them to savor the authentic flavors of Taiwan and the exquisite craftsmanship of Xiao Long Bao. As diners step into Din Tai Fung, they embark on a journey steeped in tradition, love, and the art of dumpling perfection, according to the company website.
