Galveston Avenue will be getting a new barbecue concept next spring.
Runaround Sue BBQ is coming to 1254 NW Galveston Avenue on the west side of Bend, according to a post from What’s Happening Central Oregon. This is currently El Sancho and is closing later this month. After the closure, construction will start inside to prepare for next year’s opening.
El Sancho has four locations throughout Bend, including their catering outpost just a few blocks from the west location at 735 NW Columbia Street. The chain is known for their tacos with cilantro served in fried corn tortillas. Now, owner Jon Barvels is transitioning to his own spin on a barbecue joint.
“It’s something that we’ve had on the back burner for a while,” Barvels told What Now Portland.
Barvels first opened the restaurant as a food tuck in 2019. In an article from KTVZ, there will be pop-ups in January and February next year to promote the new business.
Galveston Avenue is a vibrant area of Bend, with Ariana Restaurant being across the street and 10 Barrel Brewing West Side Bend a few blocks down. El Sancho has outdoor seating in the rear and on NW 13th Street, and the setup for the new restaurant is expected to be similar.
The other El Sancho locations will remain open while construction is happening on the Galveston location. More updates will be provided on the business’s Facebook page.
