Sisters of the Road Cafe is slated to reopen sometime in 2025 in Old Town, located at 331 NW Davis Street, confirmed by Executive Director Kat Mahoney.
“We are planning to reopen in 2025,” Mahoney told What Now Portland, “We hope to be bigger, serve more folks, and have a community room where people can gather and have meetings during the day. Previously, the only space available was the cafe when it was closed in 2022.”
In a press release provided by Kat, Sister’s purchased the House of Louie building in Old Town/Chinatown as its new permanent home. Described as an icon of historic Chinatown, the House of Louie will soon house the 43-year-old organization’s cafe, staff offices, and other programming.
Sisters of the Road is a nonprofit cafe and advocacy organization working to create
systemic change that will end poverty and homelessness by providing nourishing
meals in a safe, dignified space.
The cafe is described as having a rich history of welcoming and feeding anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Their bartering system proved that all people have the ability to contribute to the greater good and exemplified Sister’s philosophy of dining with dignity.
“House of Louie represents immigrant resilience in the face of otherness and
displacement, and a sense of belonging carved out in a corner of an unwelcoming
world. This resonates deeply with the story of our organization and those we serve,”
Mahoney said in the press release.
“As a South Korean adoptee and immigrant who grew up working class, this is personal. It’s not just a building. We now have the opportunity to determine our own path in the face of oppression and hate. That’s dignity.”
