Smitty’s Taphouse Owners Seeking New Tavern Concept in Hawthorne

Hawthorne continues to be a neighborhood with new restaurants and bars popping up.

Next spring is set to be a big year for the owners of Smitty’s in Sellwood-Moreland.

A new bar called Tall Boy Tavern looks to be coming to Hawthorne at 4343 SE Hawthorne Boulevard as a liquor license application was recently submitted. The new spot will serve both drinks and bites. Owner Tyler Smith told What Now Portland they will not open the location until around April.

Smith has been the owner of Smitty’s Taphouse since 2021. The restaurant and bar at 7718 13th Avenue, serving local draft beers as well as food like pizza and chips. His new location will serve burgers, sandwiches and wings.

The new business is at the corner of SE Hawthorn Boulevard and SE 44th Avenue. In the application, the space has seating for 73 inside and 54 outside. For hours of operation, these are listed as weekdays 3-9 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Currently at the address is Gigantic Brewing Hawthorne Pub. The building is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, including Kure Superfood Cafe and Common Grounds Coffeehouse.

Smith said he will not be sharing details on the opening date until early next year. He has not yet made any announcement on social media, but is expected to in the near future.
