Taqueria Mexa is opening a second location at 1921 SW 6th Ave in downtown Portland, according to owner Salvador Salazar, who confirmed the news directly to What Now Portland. Salazar said the restaurant is waiting on its liquor license before fully promoting the opening.
Salazar said the downtown location will build on what has already worked at the original Taqueria Mexa on SE 82nd Avenue, focusing on Mexico City-style Mexican food. He pointed to items like machetes, huaraches, tlacoyos and gorditas as dishes that stand out, food he said customers won’t find at every Mexican restaurant in the area. The machetes in particular, oversized folded tortillas packed with fillings, tend to draw extra attention, according to Salazar. The new location will also carry a drink menu inspired by Mexico City.
Salazar shared a message for the Portland community ahead of the opening. “We want to give a little push to Taqueria Mexa and grow it more there in downtown, to get ourselves known a bit more,” he said. “And for people to know that we specialize in Mexico City style Mexican food.”
The new location sits along SW 6th Ave in the heart of downtown Portland, a stretch that sees steady foot traffic from office workers, transit riders and visitors moving through the city’s core.
