A favored Thai restaurant is coming back with a new location and larger menu.
Yui is entering a new chapter as it is reopening in a new location, 4246 SE Belmont Street. The restaurant closed in July 2023, and the owner Chalunthorn “Yui” Schaeffer has since hosted pop-ups. The posted opening date is Jan. 2.
Schaeffer’s menu will be slightly larger than the last, but carrying over signature dishes like noodle curry, garlic pork rib and massaman curry. She grew up in Thailand and has years of experience working in restaurants around the U.S. When she opened Yui in 2020 in Northeast Portland, Schaeffer put in a lot of effort to make it a staple Thai establishment for the city.
“I put everything that I have,” my energy,” Schaeffer said.
Right now, work is being done inside the space to prepare for opening day. Schaeffer is hosting an event tomorrow, showcasing food and giving the employees an opportunity to make and serve the dishes. The restaurant will have a more modern look, with a garage door in front and benches for tables.
The new location is on the south side of SE Belmont Street, in the same building as the Slappy Cakes breakfast spot. Across the street are Brazilian House, Nil. Wine Bar and Benevolent Coffee Cart.
