Sacramento Mexican Restaurant Recommended to Close After Health Inspectors Cite Violations

The Sacramento County health department inspected Tequileros Taqueria on December 30. The restaurant was cited for multiple violations, including an inaccessible hand sink and open kitchen doors during food preparation, resulting in a closure.

Tequileros Taqueria serves Mexican cuisine in Sacramento’s Howe Avenue area. According to the inspection report, the restaurant was found non-compliant with food safety regulations and was issued a red grade. Some of the violations were:

  • No hand soap was available in the dispenser at the handwash sink in the customer restroom. The report noted that handwash sinks must be fully stocked with soap and paper towels. This was corrected during the inspection.
  • One live German cockroach nymph was found inside the cabinet below the ice bin at the front service/register area.
  • The inspection report noted one live adult German cockroach on a cardboard box of checkered food tray liners in the dry storage room.
  • There was one live German cockroach nymph inside the corner of the door frame at the kitchen entrance near the paper storage rack.
  • Three dead German cockroaches (nymphs and adult) were found below the soda machine, on a metal table, and on the floor.
  • One dead German cockroach nymph was observed on the floor outside the kitchen door, and four dead German cockroach nymphs were on the floor of the dry storage room.
  • Inspectors found five dead German cockroaches, including nymphs and adults, on the floor and shelving below the ice bin in the front service area.

  • It was observed that the establishment had used excessive unvarnished wooden material to build the front service/register counter.
  • Several gaps were observed around the kitchen pass-through window and the kitchen entrance door frame, and cracked coving tiles and loose rubber coving were also noted in the kitchen.
  • The report stated that drinks were found stored near food and in food-contact areas in the rear kitchen. It was noted as a repeat violation.
  • The rear kitchen door was kept propped open during active food preparation.

According to the inspection report, the facility’s health permit to operate has been temporarily suspended owing to vermin activity. The health department has installed a closure placard in front of the facility.

The establishment will be unable to open without the approval of the health department. The restaurant can request the department for a reinspection. The report pointed out that a complete inspection was not conducted during the visit; it shall be finalized during the reinspection.

According to the inspection report, required corrections include approved pest control treatment, recordkeeping, monitoring measures, and sanitation of affected areas.
