A new concept is taking shape inside a longstanding Midtown Sacramento music studio.
Last month, What Now Sacramento reported that local real estate broker Dave Herrera was planning to open a new brewery, taproom, and event venue in Curtis Park. Now, Herrera has another project in the works: a bar and café called Backstage Brewing Company, located in Midtown’s north end at 1812 D St.
The Sacramento Business Journal mentions that the commercial broker is seeking a conditional use permit to sell alcohol, as well as a design review to convert part of the existing 2,600-square-foot recording studio, which has operated for over two decades, into a public-facing taproom. The front parking area would be transformed into an outdoor garden with table seating and umbrellas.
“The existing recording studio is an appointment-only business with no markings on the building,” the application explains. “We are looking to offer a new concept that will be open to the public… We have been a part of the neighborhood for a very long time and feel there is a need for a concept like we are proposing.”
The proposed venue would serve beer, wine, coffee, and “mixology options,” alongside nonalcoholic drinks, pastries, and light bites. Tenative hours are set for noon to 8 p.m. daily, with the possibility of earlier openings as the coffee program develops.
When the bar isn’t open, the building would continue to operate as a recording studio, hosting both local talent and nationally recognized artists.
Meanwhile, the other proposed location, also called Backstage Brewing Co., would open in the former Hoppy Brewing Company space near Broadway with a “Nashville-meets-Hollywood” aesthetic. Herrera could not be reached for comment, so it’s unclear whether both concepts will move forward.
