A cozy new bookstore, café, and community hub is brewing in Roseville.
Nessa Slade, founder of The Plot Twist Bookstore & Lounge, is bringing her online and pop-up bookshop to life with a brick-and-mortar storefront. While a site hasn’t been secured just yet, she is actively scouting spaces throughout the city and hopes to welcome guests by fall 2026.
“While Roseville has had small bookstores in the past, the city currently lacks a dedicated independent bookstore,” Slade, who grew up in Roseville, wrote in an email to What Now Sacramento. “At the moment, the only major bookstore option is Barnes & Noble, and there are very few community-centered spaces where people can explore books, hobbies, and connection under one roof. By opening The Plot Twist, I hope to fill that gap—not just with thoughtfully curated books, but with a vibrant, inclusive third space designed for gathering, discovery, and creativity.”
Described as “a haven for curious minds and wandering souls,” The Plot Twist will marry the moody charm of a dark academia-inspired bookstore with the easy comfort of a cozy neighborhood lounge. Picture a vintage library with soft lighting, tucked-away reading nooks, and plenty of space to unwind or connect with others.
From fantasy to nonfiction, the shelves will be stocked with books for all ages and interests, while the calendar will feature a rotating mix of events. Expect author talks, book clubs, storytimes for children, bookish trivia nights, craft workshops, career-building sessions, and other community-centric gatherings.
Slade also hopes to weave music into the experience with curated reading playlists, select album offerings, and even karaoke nights. “Music, much like books, tells a story and taps into emotion in a powerful way, and it’s something I’d love to include as the space evolves,” she noted.
Though the café’s menu is still evolving, Slade is already dreaming up a selection of caffeinated and non-caffeinated literary-themed drinks—like the P-Latte Twist and Faerie Royaltea—paired with light bites designed to suit a variety of dietary needs.
Ahead of its brick-and-mortar debut, locals can support The Plot Twist by shopping the online store and attending upcoming pop-ups, like the one at National Night Out on August 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roseville’s Blue Oaks Park.

“Whether it’s exploring a different genre, picking up a new hobby, or even shifting careers, we believe those unexpected turns can lead to the most meaningful chapters of our lives,” said Slade. “I truly believe Roseville is ready for a space like this—and I hope the community will join me in writing this next chapter together.”
