A beloved bakery in downtown Davis is gearing up for a fresh start just down the block.
Village Bakery is relocating from its snug spot at 814 Second St to the former Uncle Vito’s Slice of NY space at 524 Second St, according to Wendy Weitzel of the Comings & Goings newsletter.
Founded in 1997 by baker Aziz Fattahi, Village Bakery is known for its New York–style pizza (sold by weight), alongside an abundant lineup of breads and baked goods. Fattahi also operates Village Pizza & Pints on B St, known for its Neapolitan-style pies.
Fattahi hadn’t planned to move, but Pratibha Realtors LLC did not renew his lease, prompting the relocation. The landlord reportedly intends to open a new eatery in the original space, though it’s not yet known what the concept will be.
The incoming Village Bakery will span roughly 2,200 square feet, giving Fattahi room to experiment. An earlier report from The California Aggie mentions that the new menu will introduce Roman-style pizza al taglio (square pies with a range of toppings), plus beer, wine, and a full espresso bar featuring an expanded coffee selection.
Fattahi recently painted over the iconic Uncle Vito’s mural on the building’s E Street side, a New York–themed artwork locals loved. He assured community members that he’s collaborating with John Natsoulas of Natsoulas Gallery on a new mural that reflects both Village Bakery and Davis as a whole.
An exact opening date for the new Village Bakery has not yet been announced.
