The owners of the long-standing Southside breakfast spot Bobbie’s Cafe are opening a bakery just next door. At 6722 S Flores Street, Birdie’s Bake Shop will serve grab-and-go salads and soups, as well as a specialty menu item — cronuts.
For readers who are unfamiliar with Bobbie’s Cafe, the business has been in co-owner Greg Ferris’s family for around 50 years and is known for hearty breakfast meals like biscuits and gravy. According to his wife and co-owner Ana Ferris, it has even become a bit of a San Antonio tourist destination — “The space overflows on the weekends; sometimes there’s up to a two-hour wait,” she tells What Now San Antonio.
So, when the neighboring space became available, the two felt an opportunity had fallen into their hands.
Inspired by the lack of family-owned specialty coffee shops on the Southside, Birdie’s will serve custom blend coffee provided by a local roaster and a menu that boasts fresh specialty salads and soups for takeaway, as well as cronuts — doughnuts made from croissant dough filled with cream. While the cronut flavor options haven’t been decided yet, Ana Ferris says that she and her kids have been experimenting with strawberry, lemon blueberry, chocolate, and maple bacon.
The space is currently undergoing renovation and is slated to open in June. In the meantime, follow Birdie’s Bake Shop on Facebook for additional updates.
