According to a recently submitted permit application, the Southern burger joint franchise Whataburger — well-known for serving hearty burgers, biscuits, and crispy chicken tenders — is preparing to debut a new location in Gonzales.
Coming to 2530 Water Street, the eatery will land just down the road from Gonzales Municipal Airport and establishments such as GG Steaks & Spirits, McCoy’s Building Supply, and Texpresso.
The location’s franchisee, Greg Deters, tells What Now San Antonio, “This is a move to a new location on Hwy 183 for us. We have currently been operating a WB in Gonzales for over 25 years. We look forward to welcoming the community.” He also mentions that the new outpost will offer “almost double the amount of seating and the addition of a digital/online ordering drive-thru lane.”
Additionally, the filing reveals that renovations to the 3,200-square-foot spot are slated to begin on July 21, 2025, and finish on September 29. For an estimated $900,000, the project will be managed by the San Antonio-based firm Jeffers Group Inc.
For readers who aren’t familiar with the company’s history, Whataburger offers a brief overview on its website: “On August 8, 1950, an adventurous and determined entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson opened up the world’s first Whataburger on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. He had a simple goal: to serve a burger so big it took two hands to hold and so good that after one bite, customers would say, ‘What a burger!’”
Now, the chain boasts “more than 1,100 Whataburger restaurants across 16 states stretching from Las Vegas to the Carolinas.”
An opening date has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for updates.
