According to a recently submitted permit application, the Southern burger joint franchise Whataburger — well-known for serving hearty burgers, biscuits, and crispy chicken tenders — is preparing to debut a new location in Gonzales.
Coming to 2530 Water Street, the eatery will land just down the road from Gonzales Municipal Airport and establishments such as GG Steaks & Spirits, McCoy’s Building Supply, and Texpresso.
What Now San Antonio reached out to Whataburger to inquire about the company’s expansion in the Alamo City, but a representative could not provide additional information in time for publication.
Nevertheless, the filing reveals that renovations to the 3,200-square-foot spot are slated to begin on July 21, 2025, and finish on September 29. For an estimated $900,000, the project will be managed by the San Antonio-based firm Jeffers Group Inc.
For readers who aren’t familiar with the company’s history, Whataburger offers a brief overview on its website: “On August 8, 1950, an adventurous and determined entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson opened up the world’s first Whataburger on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. He had a simple goal: to serve a burger so big it took two hands to hold and so good that after one bite, customers would say, ‘What a burger!’”
Now, the chain boasts “more than 1,100 Whataburger restaurants across 16 states stretching from Las Vegas to the Carolinas.”
An opening date has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for updates.
