Communal Coffee, a creative-minded cafe and shop founded by Jen Byard in 2015, is expanding with a new location in San Diego at 2710 Third Avenue in Bankers Hill.
Known for its thoughtfully designed spaces and focus on community, Communal offers craft coffee, seasonal food, fresh floral arrangements, and curated goods. The company’s fifth location is set to open on July 15, inside Kaya, a mixed-use building designed by architect Jeff Svitak, who also designed The Louisiana building next to the original North Park cafe, according to San Diego Magazine. This marks the first official collaboration between Byard and Svitak, following nearly a decade of discussion.
The Bankers Hill cafe follows the success of its locations in North Park, South Park, Oceanside, and along 30th Street. It will feature 60 to 70 indoor seats, a 20-seat outdoor patio adjacent to Olive Street Park, and a vintage Brazilian-inspired interior. The space will be open to both Kaya residents and the broader neighborhood, which Byard highlights as a diverse and well-suited community for the brand. Plans include the addition of beer and wine, as well as extended hours of operation. Communal Coffee Bankers Hill will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
When Communal Coffee opens its Bankers Hill location, customers can expect a full craft coffee menu, including popular drinks like the Lavender Honey Latte, Salted Caramel Latte, and Sweet Mint Cold Brew. The cafe will also offer seasonal dishes, including avocado toast, bagel sandwiches, and pastries. On the retail side, shoppers can browse a curated selection of items, including candles, jewelry, plants, and floral bouquets. This location will include both indoor and outdoor seating, with a 20-seat patio. Communal’s focus remains on creating a welcoming space with quality offerings.
