Market on 8th, a popular food hall in South Bay, is getting ready to make significant changes to its site in National City at 41 East 8th Street.

The three-year-old business was founded by Novo Brazil Brewing co-founder Joel Tubao in 2021, offering various food options, specifically Indonesian and Filipino food. Now, the food hall has been taken over by Roger Cañez, who was an original tenant with his La Central Urban Grill concept, first reported by SanDiegoVille. The local restaurateur, who has helped open several well-known San Diego eateries, including Chez Loma, Sonora Express, and La Catrina, plans to overhaul most food options to emphasize Mexican cuisine.

The new upcoming food stalls will include La Parrila del Che, a steak eatery from chef Dante Ferrero Houriet, who is most known for his acclaimed Mexico City steakhouse Dante Brasa y Fuego; Carnitas Quiroga, a microchain found in National City and Tijuana, offering Mexican classics such as carnitas and chilaquiles; Kiko’s Place, a local food truck that was featured on Netflix’s Taco Chronicles; Coleta, a new brunch concept from chef Antonio Liui who owns over ten restaurants in South County and Mexico; Marcella, a Neapolitan pizza pop-up from chef Guillermo Ivan; and finally, Cafe Alessie, a new breakfast concept featuring coffee, waffles, and pastries.

Market on 8th will keep only two of its previous tenants: Donburi Rice Bowls and Ping Yang Thai. The rest of the 9,000-square-foot space will be used for these new vendors. The food hall will introduce these new concepts in early September 2024. While the food hall is expected to stay open during this transition, there will be a grand opening celebration event for the occasion.
