After Border X Brewing recently shuttered its Barrio Logan taproom, Mason Ale Works will revive the space at 2181 Logan Avenue.
Mason Ale Works founder Grant Tondro has teamed up with Border X founder David Favela to reopen the decade-old venue, which closed at the end of 2024, according to San Diego Beer News. The duo recently submitted a liquor license application and hopes to open as soon as next week. If everything goes as planned, the two brands will serve from a shared tasting room offering Border X and Mason Ale Works beers through 16 taps, double what was there before. In addition to the two beer brands, customers can expect to see a variety of its affiliated brands and San Marcos’ Castellum Ciders products.
Mason Ale Works is rapidly expanding in San Diego County, starting with Eppig Brewing in Fall 2023 and followed by Second Chance Beer Co., Shoots Beer, and other beverage producers. Recently, Mason welcomed The Lost Abbey to Eppig’s Vista headquarters, which includes a tasting room, activity center, and a waterfront biergarten in Point Loma. The company also tried a tasting room in East Village next to Petco Park during the Padres’ season, but that venue has since closed. The Mason Ale Works team will now grow its reach with this new Border X Brewing collaboration.
“Border X has done an amazing job over the last 10 years to ensure that craft beer was part of that community, and this was a great opportunity to carry that torch,” Tondro tells San Diego Beer News. “The first step is to be respectful of the art that has been poured in by the community over the years, so if a Border X regular comes into the space once we reopen, they likely won’t see a lot that’s different at first. We will slowly add more branding from Mason Ale Works as we find the right ways to complement what is already there.”
