Barrio Donas is a donut shop that stives for more than just good flavors. The shop, owned by Jonathan Garcia and Janet Martinez, has been operating in Clairemont since 2018 and aims to “represent the multilayered cultural experience that comes with living in San Diego while emphasizing the radiante beauty of Mexican-American culture.”

And, well, yes—this does take the form of a donut.

Good news for southern San Diegans—Barrio Donas is expanding. SanDiegoVille reports the eatery’s second location is due to open as early as this fall in National City. The article goes on, “Like the original branch, the new outpost will serve a menu of donuts made with Mexican flavors and influence, as well as a large array of torta sandwiches, tamales, and coffee drinks.”

More specifically, Barrio Donas bakes up confections with flavor profiles like ‘Chocolate Abuelita,’ ‘Arroz con Leche,’ ‘Cinnamon Roll,’ and ‘Churro.’ Their signature donut is the ‘Barrio’s Dona’ a bright and beautiful-looking creation that is half donut, half concha. You can even get your hands on vegan donuts.

So, if you live in National City or you’re down to commute for a delicious bite, you don’t want to miss the expansion of this “hybrid donut shop that highlights the muchos sabores of both Mexican and American cultures using family recipes and the highest quality ingredients.”
