Philz Coffee, a California-based coffee chain known for customized brewed-to-order blends, is planning to open a new location in San Diego at 1640 Camino Del Rio North.

The proposed site is located within Mission Valley Mall, according to documents submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. While an exact opening date has not been announced, the filing indicates the company’s interest in expanding its footprint in the area. Customers can expect Philz’s signature made-to-order coffee, personalized service, and a range of house blends.

If this comes to fruition, this would become Philz Coffee’s fifth location in San Diego. The company already operates shops in Del Mar, Encinitas, and La Jolla, with a previously reported Downtown San Diego location also in progress. That Downtown site, first reported by What Now, is currently listed as pending inspection based on Department of Environmental Health and Quality records.

Philz Coffee was founded in 1978 by Phil Jaber, who spent years developing coffee blends before opening the first official store in San Francisco’s Mission District in 2003. The company has since expanded across California and into Chicago, building a reputation for its focus on quality, sourcing, and community engagement. Each cup is individually brewed, emphasizing customization rather than traditional espresso-based service.

The Mission Valley Mall redevelopment makes this a strong location for the brand, as the area continues to attract new retail, dining, and residential development. With its central location and steady flow of shoppers and commuters, the site aligns with Philz Coffee’s preference for accessible neighborhoods.

Philz Coffee’s menu focuses on handcrafted blends made from sustainably sourced beans roasted at its Oakland facility. Customers can choose from a variety of flavor profiles and customize each cup to their preference, with options for cream, sweetness, and strength. The company’s approach centers on a more personalized coffee experience that has helped build a loyal following over the years.
