REEF, a technology platform that transforms urban parking lots into neighborhood ghost kitchens, has filed for permits at 1205 Prospect Street in La Jolla. From what we know about REEF and the address, it looks like the company intends to use the parking garage at the commercial building as a new food hub.
In the age of contactless services and mobile ordering, ghost kitchens are popping up everywhere. Much like Barrio Food Hub and soon-to-open Aztec Food Hub, two virtual food halls led by LA-based CloudKitchens.
In most cases, how it works is you order your food directly from the website, then pickup or request delivery through your preferred app (UberEats, DoorDash, etc.).
For many restaurants, having a hub for takeout-only orders is a way for expansion without the large investment into a new facility. Brands that have already established a social media following, can start serving outside of their usual locations and expand their reach.
REEF Kitchen could not be reached for an update on when San Diegans can expect their debut in La Jolla. What Now San Diego will continue to report when restaurants are added to their delivery line-up.
