Relic Bageri, a San Diego-based pandemic-born bagel and pastry pop-up, is ready to open a permanent storefront at 845 15th Street in the East Village.
The company’s first brick-and-mortar is set to move into the former home of Blackmarket Bakery on the ground floor of the Spaces Makers Quarter co-working space, according to Eater San Diego. Owners Samantha Bird and Derek Hadden hope to open this location in either mid-May or early June, featuring a bakery and cafe. Customers can expect a large patio and plenty of room inside for seating. Eventually, the duo hopes to launch a full-service restaurant with beer and wine in the same space.
While this is an exciting development for Relic Bageri, the company plans to keep its Miramar location open for pre-order pickups. This space will continue to be used for sourdough production and eventually help with the company’s bread program. When the East Village restaurant finally takes shape next year, guests can expect a New American menu based on his training in French technique and seasonal ingredients. This is a remarkable achievement for the owners, who have known each other for almost seven years.
“We met in 2017 while working together at the restaurant Herb & Wood,” according to the company’s website. “Derek was the sous-chef, and Sam, the lead baker. We connected from the moment we met and have been partners in and outside the kitchen ever since. We having been running Relic Bageri for the past 3 years. It started in Samantha’s North Park apartment during the pandemic and has since blossomed into the bakery she always dreamed of!”
