The owners of Homestyle Hawaiian and Manuela Malasadas are preparing to open a new location at 2707 Boston Avenue, K6, within the Barrio Food Hub.
This is the latest from Anselmo and Aimee Tolentino, a pair of Hawaiian food enthusiasts who already operate several brick-and-mortar locations for both brands throughout San Diego. Manuela Malasadas was founded in early 2024 at 2720 E Plaza Boulevard in National City. On the other hand, Homestyle Hawaiian has four brick-and-mortar throughout San Diego County, including in San Diego near Kearny Mesa Park, Chula Vista, Tierrasanta Boulevard, and National City. The company is preparing to open both concepts in a food hall for the first time. Anselmo tells What Now San Diego that this dual concept will open in about three weeks, hopefully by early March 2025.
When the new location opens, customers can look forward to a complete Hawaiian fusion meal at any time of day. Homestyle Hawaiian will feature various lunch and dinner options, while Manuela Malasadas will focus on breakfast and dessert offerings. Homestyle Hawaiian will serve dishes such as Furikake Salmon Plate, Chinese Chicken Salad, and poke nachos. In addition to savory items, the restaurant will also provide breakfast plates all day, which include a main dish, two scoops of steamed white rice, and a choice of macaroni or green salad.
On the other hand, Manuela Malasadas will offer various coffee options and pastries in the morning, along with its signature dish—malasadas. These fried pastries from the Azores are made from flattened rounds of yeasted dough coated in sugar and cinnamon or served with molasses. While this dessert has Portuguese roots, Manuela Malasadas adds a Hawaiian twist, offering classic flavors and innovative combinations. Prices for these delicious treats are as follows: three malasadas for $9, six for $14, and a dozen for $23.
