San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley is going through a significant transformation with the Sunnydale HOPE SF project, an initiative that goes beyond housing to create an integrated and self-sufficient community, which is led by Mercy Housing and Related California. This initiative replaces aging public housing with modern residences while adding essential services, businesses, and recreational spaces

Highlight:

  • The developers have already completed 392 housing units, with an additional 170 units set for construction this summer.
  • In October, a $72 million, 30,000-sq-ft community hub offering education, arts, and wellness facilities was opened.
  • New retail spaces will introduce restaurants and local businesses to the neighborhood.
  • Sunnydale aims to become a self-sufficient neighborhood with essential services and amenities within walking distance.

Building Homes and Strengthening Communities

The Sunnydale HOPE SF project is not just about replacing outdated public housing but also about building a neighborhood that fosters a sense of community. According to Mercy Housing’s commercial director, Julia Katz, the goal is to ensure residents have all the essential services within five minutes of their homes.

The vision is coming to life with wellness centers, educational programs, and local shops, making the neighborhood convenient for all.

One of the main highlights of this project is the Hub, a 30,000-square-foot community center that opened in October. It includes a teaching kitchen, a library, a recording studio, and dedicated spaces for other essential services. Activities range from cooking classes and ballet lessons to hip-hop dancing and tai chi. An 11,500-sq-ft gym is all set to open this summer next to the Hub.

Boosting Local Business and Economic Growth in Sunnydale

Beyond housing, the development is looking to boost economic growth by introducing retail spaces and restaurants. The new buildings, known as Amani and Nia, will have businesses that cater to the neighborhood’s needs.

Norma Quiñónez, who is known for her handmade tortillas, tamales, and breakfast burritos that she serves at the Sunset District farmers market, has signed a lease to open her first brick-and-mortar restaurant, Semilla.

Other businesses coming to Sunnydale include Bold City Coffee, run by Sonya Brunswick, a local pastor, and Brown Sugar Shoppe a printing and apparel business by artist and educator Mauricha Robinson. Discussions are also going on with small grocery store operators to expand local shopping experiences.

The Sunnydale HOPE SF project represents more than just a housing initiative; It’s a unified urban development. Focusing on community spaces, economic opportunities, and essential services.

It aims to create a self-sustaining neighborhood that provides its residents with ample opportunities and amenities and also fosters a sense of belongingness between them. With more houses and businesses opening, Visitacion Valley is on its way to becoming a lively and inclusive part of San Francisco’s changing urban landscape.
