A new sandwich shop, Berkeley Deli & Cafe, is coming to Berkeley this winter.

Taking over a space at 1746 Shattuck Avenue, the deli will soon neighbor eateries such as Agrodolce Osteria, Taste of the Himalayas, and Thai Delight Cuisine.

Behind Berkeley Deli & Cafe is Owner Fadi Alhour, who also operates the longtime San Francisco deli Marina Submarine — which he purchased after the former owner, Kyu Jo, retired in October 2022.

Alhour tells What Now San Francisco that the Berkeley Deli & Cafe menu will boast the same offerings as Marina Submarine — think deli sandwiches topped with ingredients such as meatballs, hot pastrami, and buffalo chicken — plus pastries and espresso-based beverages.

Additionally, the upcoming deli will sell scoops of Mitchell’s Ice Cream — a San Francisco-based, family-owned ice cream business that’s been around since 1953.

Alhour is currently acquiring permitting and discussing plans with the architect, but upon opening, he says that locals can expect a “cozy cafe” with indoor seating.

Slated to open in early winter, stay tuned for the exact opening date — Berkeley Cafe & Deli will give away free sandwiches on opening day.
