Cielo Supermarket, a family-owned Mexican specialty grocery chain, is getting ready to open a new location in Pittsburg at 1375 Buchanan Road.
The company’s second location is planned for the Highland Square Shopping Center, where it will occupy roughly half of a 58,000-square-foot space previously home to Food Source, according to a recent Type 41 liquor license application. While an exact opening date has not been announced, the store is expected to debut in Summer 2026. Customers can expect a full-service grocery store with prepared foods, fresh products, and in-store dining options.
Cielo Supermarket was founded by Hector and Fabiola Gomez, along with Luis and Lupita Ayala, and opened its first location in Antioch in 2021. The family brings more than 30 years of experience in the grocery industry, including prior work with Las Montañas Supermarkets. The concept focuses on authentic Mexican products, traditional recipes, and a family-oriented shopping experience.
The Pittsburg location represents a significant expansion for the brand and comes as the city looks to fill a gap left by Food Source’s closure in 2019. City officials approved an incentive package totaling $120,000 in permit fee waivers and sales tax rebates to support the project, according to Mercury News. With a total development cost of $6.2 million, the new store will add another grocery option in a market that already includes several national and specialty chains.
The store will feature a produce section, meat department, deli, bakery, juice bar, and a tortilleria producing fresh tortillas, masa, and chips. A taqueria with indoor seating will serve items such as tacos, burritos, ceviche, and traditional dishes made from family recipes. Additional space is planned for future tenants, which could include services such as banking or pharmacy.
