According to SF Eater, Gambino’s NY Subs — a local concept known for serving NYC-style sandwiches, as well as pastries, espresso-based drinks, and breakfast options in a casual setting — plans to open a new outpost just north of Union Square.
Coming to 357 Kearny Street, the eatery will soon be neighbored by establishments such as Leleka Ukrainian Comfort Food, Onigilly Japanese Rice Balls, and the Vietnamese restaurant Tin on Kearny.
What Now San Francisco spoke with the concept’s owner, Ramzi Nijem, who operates Gambino’s alongside his father, Walid Nijem. He shared, “We’re actually the third owners… the business was started in the year 2000; my father and I took over the business in 2017. At the time, the business was in a rut.”
“We want to make it a neighborhood deli, a place where they remember your name, your order,” he shared, adding, “We want to revitalize some of the friendly culture that San Francisco is known for.”
When asked what would be on the menu, Nijem answered, “We’re going to operate the same as our Battery Street location. We’ll run our full-service menu and start adding specials as we understand what our customers want and what they ask for.”
This means that patrons who visit the Kearny Street shop will be able to choose from breakfast options such as burritos, bagels with schmeer, and protein bowls. Lunch options will include custom-built sandwiches, gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, cheesesteaks, hot subs, burgers, and hot plates — think baked eggplant parmesan, lasagna, and teriyaki rice bowls (made with either chicken, steak, or salmon).
Nijem said he plans to open Gambino’s on Kearny Street, “hopefully within the next six to eight weeks. He added, “We’re doing some light modifications.”
“We should be able to seat 15 inside and four outside,” he concluded.
The upcoming locale will mark Gambino’s third outpost, joining existing shops located at 1 Embarcadero Center (the flagship shop) and 799 Battery Street (where the Nijems debuted the second Gambino’s NY Subs outpost in 2020).
