According to a recently submitted permit application, a new dining concept listed as Hando Sando on Google Maps is preparing to open in Berkeley.
Coming to 2049 San Pablo Avenue, the restaurant will soon be a neighbor to establishments such as the family-run restaurant Babette, Luca Cucina Italiana — an “easygoing Italian restaurant” known for housemade pastas, sausages, and sauce, per its Google Business profile — and the bakery Rainbow Donuts.
What Now San Francisco reached out to Hando Sando’s owner, Binn Kitcachongpong, to learn more about his plans for the upcoming eatery; however, he could not provide additional information before publication.
Nevertheless, per the filing, the concept will be a full-service Japanese-style restaurant that offers beer and wine.
Drawing from the upcoming restaurant’s name, it’s likely that Hando Sando will offer a type of handheld sandwich that is popular in Japan, made with crustless Japanese milk bread (shokupan). Some more traditional options include the egg salad sandwich, the katsu sando (centered around a breaded and fried pork cutlet), and a fruit and whipped cream-filled sando.
Hando Sando’s debut in Berkeley will follow the June opening of a new Evergreen Cafe — which offers light fare including breakfast plates, sandwiches, cheese boards, and wine. The smashburger restaurant The Station also arrived in the city at 2984 Russell Street back in July, and has already become popular for its shakes and salads, as well as its double burgers.
