The Berkeley brunch scene is about to get a bit sunnier with the debut of Nuevo Sol. The 1,064 square-foot restaurant space that used to house Pepe’s Mexican Grill, and La Palmita Cafe before that, is now undergoing a transformation, according to a zoning certificate found in Berkeley public records.

Owner Gilberto Monroy confirmed with What Now San Francisco that Nuevo Sol is coming to 1335 San Pablo Ave. He hopes to open the restaurant by mid-February, but notes that he has much to prepare ahead of that date. That being said, Monroy wasn’t able to give away too much of his plans when asked for comment.

What we do know, however, is that Nuevo Sol will serve Mexican-American brunch cuisine. According to our source, there will be beer and wine service on the menu as well. Can we perhaps expect something like chilaquiles and fluffy pancakes, plus a michelada to wash it all down? Keep an eye on Nuevo Sol for their awaited opening to find out.
