According to SFGATE, a concept that recently opened in West Oakland, Hyphy Burger, plans to expand to East Oakland.
“I didn’t see [this] coming,” the concept’s co-owner, Darion Frazier, tells the Journal. He adds, “It took us three years to get here because we went through so many trials and tribulations through the city. … We thought it’d probably take forever for us to get another one. But as soon as we had things down pat, it was kind of like copy and paste.”
Coming to 825 International Boulevard, taking over a space formerly home to KFC, the restaurant will land near establishments such as the Vietnamese fare restaurant Lemon Pepper, the Yemeni cuisine concept Sheba, and the Vietnamese food eatery Phở Ao Sen Restaurant. Per the Journal, it will be a drive-thru-focused outpost.
“Because we were doing so well, we wanted to just keep the momentum going, and we felt like it was necessary for the community to have one in the East Oakland area,” Frazier continues.
Founded by West Oakland locals Frazier and Akeem Hayes, as well as the investors Fakri and Zack Alwajeeh, the Hyphy Burger menu offers smash burgers, milkshakes, and fries.
The Journal reports that the team plans to expand throughout the Bay Area eventually, looking toward San Francisco, San Jose, Hayward, and Vallejo.
“We don’t want to burn ourselves out, but we absolutely want to spread throughout the Bay Area,” Frazier says. He adds, “We just want to make sure we have a nice model, and we want to have Oakland as our foundation.”
