Baker Beth Hughes is pivoting from pastries to wine. The pastry chef, whose resume includes Tartine and Blue Plate, is planning to open a boutique wine shop in the Castro.
Hughes has filed a change of use permit at 4126 18t Street, in the former space of eyewear store Specs in the City & Cheaters Too, reports Hoodline. Her business, Bottle Bacchanal, will specialize in natural wine, spirits, craft beer, and vintage glass and barware.
Apparently, Hughes will also offer wine tastings and classes to teach her customers the ins and outs of natural wine. And while The Castro is no stranger to wine shops (there are at least four nearby), what will set Hughes apart from the rest is her focus on natural wine, which, in theory, is wine made from pure, fermented grape juice, with no other additives.
What Now San Francisco reached out, but Hughes was not immediately available for a comment about her plans to open. But according to Hoodline, she plans to be open in September.
The Castro has been a hot topic recently, with lots of businesses and restaurants planning to open in the neighborhood within the coming months, including Hot Johnnie’s and Spro Coffee Lab. Needless to say, Bottle Bacchanal will be in good company.
