Sprouts Farmers Market is planned for the redevelopment of the former Orchard Supply Hardware property at 5651 Cottle Road in San Jose. City planning records identify Sprouts as the proposed grocery tenant at the site, while recent reporting indicates the company is targeting an opening in early 2028.
The project involves modifications to the existing vacant building, including an approximately 5,568-square-foot addition, removal of part of the existing mezzanine, and changes to the property’s vehicle circulation.
According to The Business Journal, the redevelopment is also planned to include a new daycare or preschool and additional tenant spaces. According to city records, the Sprouts portion of the project would include a Type 20 beer-and-wine license, allowing off-sale beer and wine.
Sprouts Farmers Market was founded by Stanley and Shon Boney, who opened the first Sprouts store in Chandler, Arizona, in 2002. The grocery chain specializes in fresh produce, natural and organic foods, bulk products, vitamins and supplements, meat, seafood and prepared foods.
Customers at the planned San Jose location can expect categories such as fresh produce, meat and seafood, bakery items, deli foods, bulk foods and grocery products, consistent with the company’s broader store format.
The Cottle Road project would convert a previously vacant retail property into a grocery-anchored shopping center. The site is part of the Orchard Town and Country shopping center in South San Jose.
