Two brothers are turning their lifelong dream into reality, opening their first brick-and-mortar storefront after their popular food stand became a local hit.

Rey and Osiel Gastelum, who have spent 14 years in the fine dining industry, will bring Tacos Cometa to 1620 Broadway, Unit H, taking over the former Old Street Malatang space.

“We started last December, one year exactly now. It just took off. The response from people has been great. We’re ready to take the next step,” Rey Gastelum told What Now Seattle.

The duo plans to continue serving Tacos Cometa’s classic dishes, inspired by their roots in Sinaloa, Mexico.

“We’re trying to keep the same level of quality and what people are used to. Quality is what is most important to us. We don’t want people to come to this new restaurant and say, ‘This doesn’t taste the same,’ or ‘This doesn’t feel the same.’ We want people to have the same sensation and realize why they have been backing us since the beginning,” Gastelum said.

He continued, “We might add one or two items and in the future we are thinking of doing a weekend brunch item.”

Inside the new store, a simple aesthetic will pay homage to Mexico City.

“We’re kind of basing it on some places we really like in Mexico City, some taquerias. We’re trying to keep the decor simple, clean. It’s going to play on chic restaurants with a street vendor feel,” he said.

The brothers are eager to open a storefront they can finally call their own.

“This is the first time my brother and I open something of our own. We’ve helped open restaurants before, but that’s always been for someone else. Doing it ourselves is definitely a learning process. We’re doing a lot of things we’ve never done before,” Gastelum said.

He continued, “At the same time, seeing the support from people is amazing; it’s what fuels us. I think giving the city something that’s new, something that’s fresh, and the fact that it’s deeply personal to us—that’s what I’m most excited about.”

Tacos Cometa plans to debut in March 2026. Visit the eatery’s website and follow along on Instagram for updates.
