While an official opening date has yet to be confirmed, Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. (OSF) is a vertically integrated powerhouse, specializing in the development, growth, processing, and marketing of novel tree fruit varieties crafted through bioengineering. Since its inception in 1996, OSF has been at the forefront of sustainable agriculture, offering innovative solutions to reduce food waste and revolutionize apple consumption.
Central to OSF’s vision is its flagship product, the Arctic® apple variety. These unique apples provide a game-changing solution to the pervasive issue of enzymatic browning. By cleverly applying biotechnology, OSF’s Arctic apples remain unblemished and appealing even when bitten, sliced, or bruised. This extraordinary trait translates to numerous benefits throughout the entire apple supply chain, from growers to consumers, fostering a healthier and more efficient system.
The roots of OSF trace back to its visionary founder, Neal Carter, a seasoned bioresource engineer with over three decades of global experience. Neal, along with his wife Louisa, recognized the transformative potential of biotechnology after learning about research aimed at inhibiting enzymatic browning in potatoes. Driven by a profound commitment to sustainability and a passion for innovation, Neal and Louisa set forth to apply a similar approach to apples. Their vision was clear—to enhance apple consumption, reduce unnecessary waste, and cultivate a more sustainable future.
Envisioning a world where fruit cultivation thrives through cutting-edge science, OSF is dedicated to harnessing excellence in talent, culture, and technology. Their mission revolves around delivering premium quality tree fruit products, and nurturing a constant pursuit of a healthier, more sustainable planet, according to the company website.
