With two locations in South Florida, ScandyCandy has been introducing the Sunshine State to “A Sweet Taste of Sweden.” Now, it’s Sarasota’s turn: this month, ScandyCandy will launch a new location in the Mall at University Town Center in Sarasota.

At the heart of the concept is “Saturday Candy,” a Swedish tradition since the 1960’s, Wilhelm Olsen, co-founder of ScandyCandy, told What Now on Thursday.

“At the time, dentists were trying to reduce cavities. So you would say to children, ‘We just eat candy on Saturdays.’ And it created a tradition. But now, what we’re saying is, this is a really beautiful thing. It doesn’t just have to be Saturday. It can be Saturday all week.”

Guests walk into the ScandyCandy shop, grab a bag, and pick and mix their choices from more than 260 varieties. The product is sold by weight, so you can have a sense of how much you’re paying.

“One thing that makes us different,” Olsen says, “is that we use only natural flavors and natural ingredients. We have a lot of vegan options and sugar-free options, and everything tastes realer and fresher than people are used to.”

Why should I try Swedish Candy? asks a FAQs page on the ScandyCandy website.

“Because it’s candy that actually cares what’s in it. We source premium sweets made without high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, or fake sweeteners. Just real ingredients, bold flavors, and a cleaner kind of treat you can feel good about. One bite and you’ll get it.”

As the opening approaches, Olsen says ScandyCandy is looking for more excellent candy shop locations, including in Tampa Bay. So keep your eyes peeled, and get ready to try ScandyCandy at UTC Sarasota!
