Katsuya, the internationally recognized Japanese dining concept from Chef Katsuya Uechi and global hospitality company SBE, is set to debut its first Canadian location in Toronto, within the upcoming Freed Hotel and Residences at 240 Adelaide St W.
The 10,000-square-foot restaurant will occupy the building’s second floor and is expected to open in 2028, according to a company announcement. The development, located just west of University Avenue, will include 100 luxury hotel rooms and 400 high-end residential condominiums. Katsuya Toronto will serve as one of the property’s flagship dining experiences, offering an elevated take on Japanese cuisine in a luxury setting.
The Toronto outpost will feature a menu curated by Chef Katsuya Uechi, a master of Japanese cuisine known for blending traditional culinary techniques with modern flavor profiles. The restaurant will highlight signature dishes from Katsuya’s 20-year history alongside items created exclusively for the Toronto market. SBE, which develops and operates venues across Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and international destinations, is overseeing the project as part of its continued global expansion.
This marks Katsuya’s first location in Canada and one of the brand’s largest spaces to date. The restaurant will join a growing list of sbe-led projects, which includes both full-service Katsuya restaurants and casual offshoots like Katsuya Ko, expected to open in San Diego’s Westfield UTC in October 2025, following construction delays. That location will offer a more casual interpretation of the Katsuya experience while remaining under Chef Uechi’s culinary direction.
SBE’s Toronto launch signals confidence in the city’s growing luxury hospitality market and its demand for experiential, design-forward dining. The company has not yet released interior renderings or confirmed a specific opening date; however, additional details are expected as the project progresses.
